LOUISE RENNISON NATIONAL

FUNNY AWARD 2020

Welcome to the The Louise Rennison National Funny Award - a writing and performing arts competition designed to showcase the creative and comedic talents of young people throughout the UK.

Inspired by the legacy of late Author and comedian Louise Rennison, The Louise Rennison National Funny Award is aimed at 11-18 year olds across the United Kingdom, who don’t take themselves too seriously!

Whether you love telling funny stories or jokes, have an idea for a comedy sketch or song – or just fancy giving something new a go - we want to hear from you …

The competition is FREE to enter and falls into two categories:

- Comedic Writing (up to 1,000 words or three pages of creative copy – this could be a short story, a script, a screen play, a book chapter or an article for a magazine or newspaper).

- Comedic Performance (up to three minutes of video – this could be a scene for a film, a TV show, a play, an advert or a stand-up performance).

We want you to channel your creativity and tickle our funny bones with new material – where all submissions must be original ideas (no copying or re-enactments!).

Submissions in the written category and the performance art category will be judged in two age bands: 11-14 and 15-18 with the option to enter as an individual or a group (four people max). There will be prizes for first place, and runners up prizes for all finalists.

Your mission – should you chose to accept it – is to have our panel of judges rolling on the floor with laughter – but most importantly – for you to have fun!

INSPIRATION

EVERYTHING YOU NEED

TO KNOW

IDEAS & INSPIRATION

DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY

Our competition is all about fun, being creative and exploring your funny side!

You don't have to consider yourself funny to enter, nor do other people have to think you're funny - it's about giving something new a go and seeing where it may take you!

The Louise Rennison National Funny Award is designed for you to have fun with comedic writing and performance.

With free entry, you can also submit as many entries as you like - so play, experiment and explore your inner funny side!

TEST OUT IDEAS WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY

Once you've thought of your funny ideas, why not test them out with your friends and family to see if you can make them laugh?

By giving your ideas a test run first, it will give you the chance to gain some valuable  feedback and see what makes people smile (and maybe what doesn't).

If you're entering our written category you can ask your family to read over your submission first, and if you're entering our performing category you can practice your performance before  recording it.

WRITE THINGS DOWN

If something funny comes into your thoughts, scribble it down on a piece of paper before you forget!

Taking notes will help you to remember your ideas and scribbling thoughts on paper is more spontaneous  than typing ideas on a computer.

You can then come back to them later and develop them further.

Some ideas might not be as funny as you remember and others might be even funnier but keeping notes will help you remember which ideas to keep and develop and which ideas to drop altogether!

RECORD CLIPS ON YOUR PHONE

Another great way to test out your funny side is to record video clips of your ideas and watch them back.

This will help you develop your ideas further, and can also be a really fun way to explore your funny side!

Be daft, be silly, be adventurous with your ideas!

When you watch the clips back, you can send them on to friends and family too or if you don't like the clips when you see them again - it's OK to delete and try again.
